In medicine, acrania is a partial or complete absence of the cranium. Progressive metalheads in Acrania embrace the same sentiment when it comes to their music, embracing not only the hard and heavy Death and Thrash Metal conventions, but also more melodic progressive song structures as well as Latin and even "Jazzy" elements.
The band was formed in Mexico City in 2006, although their first studio EP, "In Peaceful Chaos", was recorded and released until 2007, this due to a personal and musical growth together between members who sought Acrania's perfect balance between Latin Jazz and Metal as well as complementing their music with other instruments outside those "typically metal" ones.
There are plenty of bands out there that are fast and loud and pretty good at it, other bands might be noisier, or spend years perfecting their gutural vocals, but no other band across todays metal spectrum can top the inventive that Acrania has shown flinging around Latin interludes (that go all the way from Samba, to Bossanova, to Salsa and more), Typical Mexican rhythms and Jazzy riffs.
This has taken them to extensively tour around Mexico sharing stage with bands as Diablo Swing Orchestra.
In November of 2010 Acrania launched their first full-length album entitled "Unbreakable Fury" which features an impressive artwork made by Eliran Kantor (Atheist, Mekong Delta, Aghora, Testament, Master, Sodom, etc.) as well as a wide range of well known mexican musicians.
To mark the release of their debut album "Unbreakable Fury" Acrania made a mini tour in Germany with the support of The Wacken Foundation (Berlin, Soest, Dresden) having a great acceptance with the european public.
Coming from a similar line to bands like Atheist, Cynic and Nevermore, Acrania manages to create death metaller environments with touches of jazz, samba, bossa nova, Son Jarocho, etc., using a permanent lineup of vocals, guitars, bass, drums , percussion (congas, timbales, etc.), tenor saxophone and trumpet that results in this style to which they refer to as "Latin Metal".
Acrania is currently promoting their second studio album entitled "An Uncertain Collision", which was released in October 2012 with support from the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA) of Mexico.
